O linguista inglês David Crystal, preocupado com o impacto da Internet na privacidade, na propriedade intelectual, nos hábitos de recreação infantil e no futuro da língua inglesa, fez um longo estudo publicado pela Cambridge University Press sob o título de Language and the Internet. Analisando o discurso das home pages, dos e-mails, das chats e dos jogos de realidade virtual conclui que a linguagem usada na Internet enriquece a lingua pelo caráter inovador da adaptação dos usuários ao novo meio de comunicação. Ao lado dos smileys (:-) as abreviaturas de expressões vem tornando-se de uso corrente na comunicação virtual.
